John Piper in Dubai: “That tower is comin’ down!”
While filming a promo in Dubai (UAE) for the new student missions conference, CROSS, John Piper (standing in front of the Burj Khalifa tower) makes this statement:
“And that tower and this city are coming down!”
Was that a wise thing to say while standing on United Arab Emirates soil? I wonder how the Arab people would understand his remark if they saw this?
You wonder as you wander, Joel? 😉
Nice example Piper is setting for missionaries.
Oops, my bad. Corrected, and thanks.
On the other hand, our Lord and his apostles didn’t shy away from proclaiming the judgment which is to come.
We needn’t be glib, but all false gods and their religious adherents shall bow the knee to the Lord Jesus: Either willingly or begrudgingly, all shall bow.
Proclaiming judgement in general is not the same thing as the context in which he did this. He also cannot know the plans God has for Dubai, so his pronouncements here are usurping the place of the Holy Spirit or Jesus himself. But then he’s charismatic so he probably got some download from God. (yes, that’s sarcasm)
The fact that he’s an American who has suffered a devastating attack on two tall buildings in our country, standing in front of a tower, proclaiming the tower will come down, can be easily misunderstood as a call for violent attack. He repeatedly demonstrates ineptitude in understanding how his words will be received. He is not only talking to English speakers when he puts it out for the entire world to see.
But then, Piper recently tweeted such dumb confusing stuff about Christians and firearms being unbiblical, God and Allah being the same, and Rick Warren being “orthodox” “biblical” “deeply theological” and “sound.”
Even if you remove the first part of the video, the whole thing seems about as wise as proclaiming to the world you’re about to leave and take a shipment of Bibles to Iran. Seriously??? Please, BBC elders, make him retire. He’s an embarrassment!!
Well said, TG.
Like “download from God”! 🙂
In his dotage, perhaps?
