Our Defining Moment

So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. – Philippians 2:12,13 [NASB]

The defining moments of our lives – events or circumstances that seem to shape some into who they’ve become –  should never be tragic events; dreams unrealized; the loss of a loved one or property.

Almost all of us know of someone, who, having suffered what seems to be a life-changing event, have held on to it, allowing it to define who they have become, and others to come to know them by the same event.

“Do you know Sally?” “Oh, yes, she lost her husband in a car accident. She’s never been the same since.”

“Remember Mark?” “Yeah, his dad died and he never went back to church.”

Those who suffer such and remain fixated on those events, do not progress in sanctification. For some, once thought fine Christians, it may reveal their true nature, forsaking the church, no fear of God, much less dependence upon Him, in a word, yet lost and without salvation.

For a true believer, the defining moments in our lives will be the realized grace of the living God working in us continuously, through our darkest moments, to will and work for His good pleasure and to His glory, in fulfillment of His holy purposes.

Regardless of our experience, we must cling in faith to the comforting truth, that “God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” – Romans 8:28
