Answering SBC President, Fred Luter

SBC President, Fred Luter, has asked a couple of very important questions. I’d like to answer them. But first…

A couple months ago, we received a large box of books at church from the North American Mission Board (NAMB). It was a box of New Testaments, entitled FindItHere, a publication produced through a partnership between NAMB and LifeWay Christian Resources.

FindItHereNTThese books were sent to every SBC church in North America and also to Canadian National Baptist churches.

We will not be making use of them, at all.

Recently, SBC President Fred Luter, at the 2013 Annual SBC meeting, had this to say in an article by the Christian Post entitled  “While We Are Arguing Theology, Lost People Are Going to Hell” (link):

I just happen to be the president of the largest protestant denomination in this world… in this country… I just happen to be the president of the Southern Baptist Convention, so I can’t speak for those other denominations, but I can speak for this convention … the question I am asking of all SBC members is what difference are we making with this lostness, what difference is the Southern Baptist Convention making in this darkness?”

“He expressed concern about statistics compiled from churches belonging to SBC for the association’s Annual Church Profile for last year that show declining numbers in several key areas, including membership, average attendance, baptisms and total monetary giving.”

According to the statistics we are not making much of a difference at all … We need all of us together to change what’s happening in America, to change what’s happening in our society

For starters Mr. President, you can:

  1. Stop spending millions of SBC dollars to send only part of God’s Word. Who gave permission to subtract from the Word of God, presenting only the New Testament and not the Old Testament as well? Do you think the warnings of Scripture about adding and subtracting from God’s Word doesn’t apply to the SBC, NAMB or Lifeway? Is not the whole counsel of God (both old and new testaments) a gift? Why split God’s Word, as if portions of it could be dismissed?
  2. Stop spending millions of SBC dollars to promote “the sinners prayer” in your FindItHere new testament. That’s exactly what you’ve done. It’s right there on page 243. What were you thinking?

Quote, page 243 of the FindItHere New Testament:

ARE YOU READY TO RECEIVE GOD’S INVITATION TO ETERNAL LIFE AND HOPE?

If so, please pray the following prayer. Remember, it is not the words you use, but the attitude of your heart. If you pray this prayer sincerely, Jesus will come into your life, and in Him you will have eternal life and hope

Dear God, I know that Jesus is Your Son and that He died on the cross and was raised from the dead. Because I have sinned and need forgiveness, I ask Jesus to come into my heart. I am willing to change the direction of my life by acknowledging Jesus as my Lord and Savior, and by turning away from my sins. Thank you for giving me forgiveness, eternal life and hope. In Jesus Name, Amen.

Following that theological absurdity, you declare anyone who asked Jesus into their heart as a member of God’s family. How dare you? You assure the reader that they are eternally secure in God. How dare you?

In addition to that dangerous nonsense, on page 244, you assure the reader that, after praying that prayer, they will begin to live for God, will be witnesses for Christ and will know God better.

The cherry of darkness you present is asking them to record “My Record of Salvation”…

Quote:

ON __________ (date)  I, _____________ (name)  trusted Jesus as my Savior and gave myself to Him to be Lord of my life.

Witnessed by: __________________

No mention of new birth, regeneration or of salvation being only of the Lord, just I, I, I decided, trusted, gave.

What is every member of NAMB, LifeWay and SBC churches making to the “lostness” and “darkness” of the world?

You’re contributing to it.

Shame on the SBC. And lest you forget, there’s a reason Fred Luter was elected.
