The Primary Business of the Christian

As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”– I Peter 1:14-16 (NASB)

Neither church planting, discipleship, apologetics, missionary work, evangelism or “soul-winning,” nor redeeming culture or creating or performing worship music are to be the top priorities of the Church in general or the Christian individually. To think that by working diligently and faithfully in these things, you and perhaps others will be sanctified is an eternally grave mistake, you will not be. We are to pursue, and strive for holiness without which no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14).

The primary business of every Christian is to be at the work to which God has called us – the mortification of sins. We, as Christians, are not called to “go out and save people” but to be Christ’s witnesses. We become witnesses for Christ by the Holy Spirit’s regenerating power and continued presence and indwelling work in us in living increasingly holy lives, separate from the ways, lusts and appearances of the world.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him, in love. – Ephesians 1:4 (NASB)
