Solid Ground, Not Thin Ice

And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him. – Hebrews 9:27,28 (ESV)

I have attempted to be faithful on this blog in stressing the teachings of Scripture. Without doubt, there have been times I could have spoken more eloquently or in a more detailed manner.

In the past, I have stressed this verse in Hebrews to categorically teach that once a man dies, there is no second chance at redemption. I’ve also pointed out, repeatedly, that once Christ returns again, there also will be no second chance at redemption. I stand there.

Here’s one comment from a reader which I feel requires a response:


I am not a Dispensationalist, but I have difficulty with your use of Heb. 9:27-28 to prove your point. The point of that text is not that Jesus will not deal with sin in any way other than judgment when he returns. The text simply means he will return without an offering for sin. The offering for sin has already been made. That does not mean there can be no additional application of that sin offering. Your view may be correct, but you are on thin ice if you try to prove it using these verses. – Randy Seiver

This comment has been made repeatedly by Randy. Quite frankly, I find this comment sorely lacking a clear understanding of the passage itself and, a propagation of an egregious error.


There is a contrast being made here, to which, first, man will die and then comes the judgment. It is a clear statement of finality. There is no further ‘application’ to be applied here. You die, then you are judged.

The Apostle Paul uses this expression of finality in man’s death and judgment to describe the second coming of Christ. Christ comes again, and then the judgment. Look at God’s Word here: Christ  “will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.” (emphasis mine)

Now, Randy would have you believe that there is an open possibility that Christ will still ‘deal with sin’ as an application of His one-time offering for it, but that is completely absurd in light of the Scripture itself. He claims to not be a dispensationalist, but he does encourage them in error in this regard.

God did not stutter; He did not miscommunicate; His truth has not been muddled by innuendoes and eye-winks here and there.

God says Christ will come again “not to deal with sin” and what does the word ‘deal’ mean?

Well, the Greek word is chōris, meaning without any, separate, apart from, or besides.

It’s pretty clear, isn’t it? When Christ returns, it will be without any reference or application in dealing with sin, apart from any application in dealing with sin, beside any application in dealing with sin.

Christ will return and will not, in any way, deal with the issue of sin – except to judge those still dead in it.

What does this mean? It means that those who continue to teach that Christ will deal with sin at His second coming are teaching an egregious lie.

John MacArthur, Dan Phillips, Phil Johnson, and every other dispensationalist you can think of is teaching a lie. That’s not a popular position, but it is mine. And those who give excuses or claim reasons for supporting such men in teaching this lie, like James White, have no excuse, none whatsoever, for their silence in speaking out against it. This is a salvific issue, and that cannot be ignored.

Brethren, we who have been called to ministry and to the proclamation of God’s Word, are duty bound to call error what it is when we see it, and not waffle like men who have only interests in their own careers and well-being.
