The Gospel According to Tebow
This video of well-known Denver Broncos QB Tim Tebow was brought to my attention this morning, and after watching it, there’s really only one word needed to describe it.
Tragic.
It’s tragic because here was an opportunity to proclaim the biblical Gospel and yet there was no message (that we know of anyway) of repentance and the command to believe the Gospel. It’s more or less the gospel of success. He led many of these prisoners in ‘the sinners prayer’ which of course, is worthless. Worse yet, he told these young men that they had nothing to worry about from this point on, that they were now welcomed into the family of God, that Tim would see them in heaven no matter what happens to them from this point on. It’s just tragic.
I don’t blame Tim Tebow directly. The ones where the blame truly lies for his biblical understanding of the the counsel of God lies with those who instructed him. Tebow is not a heretic, even though what he proclaimed was nowhere near the Gospel according to Scripture. It’s one thing to be taught wrong doctrine and then proclaim it sincerely to others while remaining ignorant of the truth. It’s quite another to proclaim error for decades, intentionally, and admit openly after much study that you intend to continue doing so.
It is tragic that, being in the spotlight the way Tebow is, with all the opportunities for witnessing at Tebows doorstep, that his pastors who taught him so wrongly apparently did not know the Gospel themselves.
This, by the way, is what happens when love-bombs are thrown instead of the reality of God’s Word, and when true biblical doctrine is devalued and replaced with love, love, love and grace, grace, grace ‘preaching’.

So where Tim went wrong is that he didnt stress the fact of them turning their lives around 360 degrees and learning through the grace of God a new way to live??
Well, his heart is certainly in the right place! And we know God can use even a donkey!

I strongly disagree with your tone and judgmental comments on Tebow’s evangelism. He preached the Good News and some received it willingly. I did not hear the emphasis on the prosperity preaching you alluded to. God raises up those He wishes.
It looks to me that Tim Tebow preached what Paul preached in 1 Corinthians 15:1-11
Tim said his life is a success because he has a relationship with Jesus Christ – not the things he has accomplished, nor that said relationship will cause him to have a successful life. But It is the relationship with God which makes his life a success – the difference may be sutble, but the emphasis is not on this life but on the eternal.
He spoke about needing to trust in Christ, having sins forgiven by God through what Christ has done. Perhaps he could have focused on leaving a life a sin. But I think the repentance needs to be change from following one’s own desires and dictates and trying to do it for one’s self and turning to God. Few people teach the Lordship of Christ. But God can change those He wants one step at a time.

Not only is their gospel presentation there missing repentance, but when it is defined in their statement of belief, it is seen as turning to Christ in faith (vs. turning from your sin). The Tebow’s are unfortunately far from understanding the biblical gospel as well as basic Christian doctrine. What may be more tragic than that however, is so are many Americans who will read this ( as well as watch the video) and see nothing wrong. This indicates what is not being taught in most pulpits today.
“You are saved by grace and grace alone lest any man should boast” Salvation has no addendums. It is pure grace. Once a man understands the full grace he has received, works come in abundance. They are not works that will be consumed like those made of wood, hay and stubble. They are tested by fire. Those works are the ones born out of love for our Savior Jesus Christ are the only works that are stored as treasure. But they in and of themselves are apart from Salvation which is the gift of God.
C.S Lewis, Cliff Richard, Bono, Tim Tebow, Alice Cooper. Is the church of our Lord Jesus Christ so beggardly that we feel that we need to promote celebrities in order to be accepted of men? Let the Word be spoken in faith from a scrawny, pimply-faced teenager in the power of the Holy Spirit and God can humble any soul on whom he sets His love, and He doesn’t need the help of movie actors, rock stars, or footballers to accomplish His will. While I’m not saying that God wouldn’t save such, but the church needs to stop depending on celeb endorsements for her advancement. We need revival!
It seems to me that God has used slaves, rulers, priests, teachers, prophets, and judges for His purpose. There’s no reason God cant/wont use philosohers, musicians, actors, and sportsmen to do so now.
