He Lives to Make Intercession for Us

The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, but He holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. – Hebrews 7:23-25 (ESV)

For those who approach God through Christ Jesus to worship, there is ever constant intercession on our behalf. What a glorious, comforting truth this is. Jesus, fully God and fully man, present before the Father, pleading and interceding on our behalf that which neither we nor any other priest could do for us. Jesus, fully perfect man, now residing in heaven, fulfilling a perfect priesthood after the order of Melchizedek, unchangeable because incapable of being transgressed as the priesthoods of old. He lives, and intercedes, not for Himself, but for us who depend on and look to Him for help; He always prays for us on our behalf. What a thought! What a truth! I live, we live, because He lives, and one day, we shall be with Him!

The old puritan, William Gurnall, put it beautifully:

Suppose a king’s son should get out of a besieged city, and leave behind his wife and children, whom he loves as his own soul; would this prince, when arrived at his father’s palace, delight himself with the splendor of the court, and forget his family in distress? No; he would come post to his father, and entreat him, as ever he loved him, that he would send all the force of his kingdom to raise the siege, and save his dear family from perishing. Nor will Christ, though gone up from the world, and ascended into his glory, forget his children for a moment, who are left behind him." He ever lives to make intercession for them. Him the Father hears always.
