The Means of Divine Transformation
The means of Divine transformation is the renewing of the mind:
It is the mind that is renewed.
The mind is the higher, mental part of man which initiates his thoughts and plans. It represents the sum total of the whole mental and moral state of being.
The mind must be renewed because of its depraved state. (Eph. 4:14-24)
The unregenerate mind is darkened in understanding and devoid of any right thought of God because of the natural blindness within it (4:17-18). The things of the Spirit of God are foolishness to the unrenewed mind (I Cor. 2:14).
This mind must be initially and continually renewed from this darkened and blinded condition. The residue of the old mind is still present and potent within the new nature and must be constantly renewed. (Eph. 4:22-24).
The primary means of renewal are the Word of God and secret communion with God in prayer. The Word is the enlightening, convicting, purging, and renewing instrument of the Spirit of God (Heb. 4:12; Ps. 19:7-14). Beholding the glory of the Lord in prayer over the Word of God changes us into that same image (2 Cor. 3:18).
Where there is no transformation in the life there has been no regeneration of the soul. The believer must give himself to these divinely ordained means which will effect this transformation. It will be the great desire and constant delight of the child of God to seek gradual and continual change into the image of Christ. This is the desired end of all doctrinal and theological input – a changed life, both inwardly and outwardly.
